For the North Korean absolute dictatorship, lies and manipulation are key tools in sustaining power over the population. By controlling the narrative, they eliminate dissent and prevent questioning of authority. Isolating the people works best for the Kim Dynasty.
Number 10. North Korea has a cure for AIDS, Ebola, cancer, and MERS
Based on a 2016 public media report, a passionate influencer said that North Koreans believe that their country has a cure for AIDS, including HIV, Ebola, cancer, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The supposedly miracle drug is hidden by the government.
This unrealistic lie that the North Korean regime feeds its people serves as justification for horror. This false information aims, therefore, to paint the government as a necessary protector against outside evil.
Number 9: Kim Jong-il was the best at everything
This does not come as a surprise. Based on the strictly regulated state media, Kim Jong-il was a master of bowling, scoring a perfect 300 on the first try. He was also a great golfer, scoring 11 holes all at once on the first try as well. The state media wrote about this ‘phenomenon’, as this is a world record.
Since the leaders are portrayed as god-like or infallible, and people have to respect that, this lie is perceived as common sense in North Korea. Despite this attempt, the bowling and golf skills of Kim Jong-il come across as odd. One influencer debunked this conspiracy by proving that scoring 11 holes all at once on the very first try is more than impossible in the real world.
Moreover, Kim Jong-il was known to be an academic. He supposedly wrote over 1,500 books while still in university and composed 6 operas after graduation. The state media believes this is the best music ever to exist.
It does not stop here. Kim Jong-il was supposedly walking from the age of 3 weeks and was also able to speak at the age of 8 weeks. The so-called genius leader is the result of a corrupt media system under insane governmental control.
If it was not obvious early on, this is a clear case of state media propaganda. It is extremely damaging for the masses: they convince people they live in a superior country, but everyone around them is only suffering.
Number 8: Kim il-sung and Kim Jong-il never used the toilet
This one state media article shows the faces of North Korea leaders Kim il-sung and Kim Jong-il photoshopped onto two bulky bodies. According to this stance, both of them had supernatural body functions and never had to use the toilet. This idea aligns with the image of gods of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
In fact, this republic is not even democratic, but surely Kim il-sung and Kim Jong-il never used the toilet in their entire lives…
Number 7: Nature mourned the funeral of Kim Jong-il
According to the Korean Central News Agency, it is believed that on December 17, 2011, when the funeral of Kim Jong-il took place, wild animals and trees were mourning the death of this incredible leader.
An influencer jokingly says that the Dear Leader of North Korea is indeed incredible for having birds and bears to mourn for him.
Number 6: Kim Jong-il was born under a double rainbow
This lie is inspired by Kim Jong-il’s very own biography text. According to this, his birth was marked by numerous supernatural events. One includes his birth, not under a normal rainbow, but under a real double rainbow!
Supposedly, Kim Jong-suk (who was the wife of Kim II-sung and mother of Kim Jong-il) gave birth to the Dear Leader under a very rare double rainbow. Born in 1942 on a mountain in a military base, Kim Jong-il also prompted the miraculous appearance of a new star in the sky. We can therefore agree that Kim Jong-il is truly a shining star, isn’t he?
Number 5: Kim Jong-un was a child prodigy
According to a 2015 report by the same trustworthy state media outlets from North Korea, people believe that Kim Jong-un was able to drive a car at the age of 3, win yachting races at the age of 9, and become an expert in musical composition at a young but undisclosed age. Number 4: Kim Jong-il invented the hamburger
I thought burgers were American ground. But actually, things are always different in North Korea.
Introduced in 2000, burgers in North Korea were a ‘new food’ or ‘the double bread with meat’. Although they did not call it a burger, just so they could pretend that they invented something revolutionary, burgers in North Korea were distributed to teachers and students. An official country plant was even created to make burgers.
Are we thinking burgers are true innovations? North Koreans believed so.
Number 3: The Japanese are stealing time
Another state propaganda aimed at foreign neighbors regards the Japanese. On August 15, 2015, Kim Jong-un set the clocks back half an hour. Accordingly, he stated that this is because the Japanese imperialists stole time in 1919. Why they had not realized it earlier, no one knows for sure. What we do know is that this victory persists…

Number 2: The entire planet loved Kim Jong-il
Back to the obvious: North Koreans believe that the entire planet loved Kim Jong-il. Their country is so important and engaged on the international relations landscape that Kim Jong-il was the most powerful leader in the whole wide world. Also, it is commonly believed that every country celebrates the birthday of this other Dear Leader every year.
I mean, could the US even celebrate the birthday of Kim Jong-il or follow foreign relations adversity as usual? This idea is nothing but national pride aimed to increase the general sentiment of nationalism. While being a devoted patriot cannot be wrong on its own, lying is.
Number 1: North Korea discovered a real unicorn
For all those that managed to scroll all the way down, you know I kept the best for last. Yes, North Korea did discover a real unicorn. Moreover, they discovered an entire lair or den where one could find such animals.
According to a 2012 report from the Korean Central News Agency, researchers discovered a unicorn habitat in North Korea. We need not question the existence of these creatures, because they do exist. Now, North Korea is a relatively small country, but we now know everything is possible over there.
It is only too bad we cannot get access to enter North Korea and see unicorns ourselves!
